About Us

Baraka Health Centre is the cornerstone of Baraka HealthNet’s work in Kenya. Located in Mathare Valley—the second-largest slum in Nairobi, approximately 5 km northeast of the city—the centre was established in 1997 by German Doctors Nairobi. Over time, its catchment area has grown beyond Mathare Valley to include several surrounding estates within Nairobi.

Currently, the centre serves over 300 patients daily. Between January and November 2023, it recorded 62,869 outpatient visits, averaging 5,715 patients per month.

Baraka Health Centre delivers its services through five main departments:

  1. General Health Clinic

  2. Nutrition Centre

  3. Comprehensive Care Clinic (for patients with HIV/AIDS and/or TB)

  4. Community-Based Services

  5. Child Protection Unit

General Health Clinic (GHC)
The General Health Clinic provides outpatient care through a dedicated team of four volunteer German Doctors and professional staff. Services include consultations, diagnostics, emergency care, and specialized clinics for chronic diseases. Additional services cover dental, eye, dermatology, reproductive health, and support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Comprehensive Care Clinic (CCC)
The Comprehensive Care Clinic offers specialized HIV and TB care, including testing, antiretroviral therapy, and treatment for opportunistic infections. It runs programs to eliminate mother-to-child transmission and provides patient support in nutrition, adherence, and prophylaxis. The clinic also offers specialized support groups tailored to diverse patient needs.

Nutrition Centre
The Nutrition Centre addresses malnutrition by providing “wet feeding” for children and adults and supporting local schools. It delivers education on conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, alongside physiotherapy and cooking lessons. The centre also facilitates support groups for patients living with chronic conditions.

Community-Based Services
The Community-Based Services program extends outreach to Mathare and surrounding areas, offering follow-up care for HIV and TB patients, home-based HIV testing, and malnutrition screening. It also promotes economic empowerment through income-generating initiatives and equips local leaders with health education. The program fosters community collaboration and coordinates disaster response efforts.

Child Protection Unit
The Child Protection Unit is dedicated to improving the welfare of children in Mathare Valley and nearby communities. It identifies and refers cases of abuse, provides treatment and support, and raises public awareness about child protection. The unit also trains local leaders and contributes to the development of child protection policies at multiple levels.
